Symbian Belle variants all get Email, Calendar and Music updates


The OS that just won't die? Two years and three months after Symbian was publicly put on life support, the platform updates keep coming, with the rollout today for all Belle Refresh and Feature Pack 2 smartphones of a 6MB Email and Calendar update, incorporating better attachment and event handling, plus a new compatibility update for Nokia Music for Belle Feature Pack 2 devices. Whatever modern Symbian device you own, head for SW Update on the device, or plug into Nokia Suite.

Here are the updates appearing on the editorial Nokia 700 (also seen on the 808, by the way):
         

        

6MB of this is the Email and Calendar update, 2MB is the Nokia Music client update...

Note the Belle Feature Pack 2-specific version number (see below); (right) Nokia Music was v16.40.2 up until today, so this looks like a minor update to maintain compatibility with changes at the server end.

Note that a reboot is needed. Also, when restarting email after the reboot, the application clears its previous cache of email headers, so be patient the first time, while all your headers and most recent messages are retrieved.

Messaging Updates

Rolling out now for Symbian Belle FP1/FP2 devices (Nokia 808/700/701) is the same 'Fix for Messaging' that the Belle Refresh generation got a month or two ago. This is presumably to fix a number of annoying bugs in Symbian Belle's Messaging application, including one where the message store would get corrupted and snippets of old messages to other people would be sent out along with the current message you were typing. Comments welcome on whether this fixes any other issues that have been annoying you, perhaps on the Nokia 808?

As usual, you can get the patch by going into SW Update on your device, from the main app menu:

                                                  
Accenture are still, it seems, very much on the case in terms of fixing up longstanding quirks in Symbian and its applications, though I have to wonder why it took over a month to roll out exactly the same bug fix (in terms of app version and build number, v10.1[28]) to the parallel platform. 

Anyone remember the bad old days when critical fixes would get delayed and then addressed as part of new firmware builds, adding more delays while operators approved every build for every phone variant? Great to see fixes able to be deployed so easily these days.

Home Screen Widgets

Today Home Screen Widgets software update has started to roll out for Nokia Belle Refresh FP1 & FP2 smartphones. The update is less than 1MB in size and contains mirror (front camera support), torch toggle, stop watch, webview browser & contacts communication widgets.

• Toggle, Flashlight - Won't work with Nokia N8 as it has Xenon Flash.

Its nice to see that Nokia is still delivering updates for Symbian smartphones, as promised by them until 2016. Homescreen widget update version is 21.0.36 and the update should be available on Nokia Suite or over the air on your device within the software update app, you must stay patient to receive this update, as the software update roll out worldwide takes a bit of time.

Getting started:

You have to disconnect the WLAN connection in order to get new the software into use. The easiest way is to turn the WLAN Off and then back On after installing this update.

Uninstallation instructions:

1. Turn WLAN Off
2. Manually uninstall "WLAN Utilities" package from the installed applications.
3. Turn WLAN On

*Problem solving:
In case you observe any issues with WLAN, please try to uninstall this package and test the same use case again to see if the same problem is visible with the old WLAN software. In any case, please create a bug report to the forum and specify the use case and give the requested information about the setup.

Fix for Gallery Image Share for FP2 Devices.

Gallery and Camera software update is now available in the software update app of Nokia Belle FP2 smartphones (Nokia 808, 700, 701 & 603). This Gallery & Camera software update offers improved Gallery and benefit from multiple image sharing feature. This update also includes usability and quality improvements for both Gallery and Camera. The software update is around 2MB in size. If the update is not yet available in your region, N8 Fan Club has attached the manual signed installation files at the end of this post. Earlier we had posted 10 manual software updates pack for Nokia Belle FP2 smartphones.




Gallery update will allow you to mark and send multiple gallery items including images & videos via Message / Bluetooth / Email / WhatsApp and on Social Services like YouTube (only for video sharing), Flickr, Facebook & Twitter. There is a limitation to share 10 images at a time, on social services. While you can mark and send unlimited gallery items in one go, via Bluetooth / Message / WhatsApp.

• Multi-select photos and share them to Facebook, Flickr or Twitter. (Max 10 Photos at a time)
• Multi-select photos and Message / Email / WhatsApp / Bluetooth them to specific recipients.
• Long press a photo from the main gallery thumbnail view, to send, share or delete it.
• In the Camera application, access the general Preferences from the info pane in any shooting mode (e.g. Auto or Scenes).
• See at a glance, again in Camera, but in 'Creative' mode, a summary of the main changes made for each of the creative presets, along with a (more) handily placed 'reset' button.
• While shooting video, you can now switch ON & OFF the LED video light (During the video recording)

We are still unable to access the front camera app on Belle FP2 smartphones even after this update. (You can give a try to Front Camera 3rd Party App). Thanks to Nokia for bringing these most wanted updates for Nokia Belle FP2 smartphones & we hope Nokia will continue to improve the Symbian experience besides they had abandoned Symbian as Nokia 808 PureView is the last Symbian Flagship.

Facebook and Youtube Share Updates Available for Nokia 808 

  

If you bought a Nokia 808 Pureview from Amazon, you may have noticed the Facebook share button didn’t work and Youtube wasn’t available. These two options are now available in Software Update.

Facebook is the default upload option while Flickr and Youtube are in Options, then Share
To get this update just fire up the ‘SwUpdate’ application on your Nokia 808 smartphone. The update fixes the Facebook Sharing button and adds YouTube Sharing (to gallery) for 808 USA firmware.

Please restart your device after the update installation. Do let us know if you find anything new in this update.
